I’ve been having a lot of fun with Photoshop lately, without really understanding how it works. Levels and Curves are fine, but the manipulation of layers and channels leaves me mystified. I was going to get “Adobe Photoshop for Photographers” to try to learn something. Anyone have better book suggestions?

I find books on photoshop really difficult to get anything out of. the best source to work from is the manual that comes with photoshop. and i only use that as a reference. whenever you get stuck it will help you out. everything is in there. its kinda hard to sit and read it and get it all. its really on-the-job training with photoshop. but youre doing very well with no training at all. layers are kinda complicated but once you get it it will be easy. you have such great stuff jordan, i hope you use as many tool as you need to create more great images!! — posted by dimitri on March 3, 2005 5:23pm

    Nice desaturated look.

I blundered my way through learning photoshop and haven’t used any books but there is one that I’ve picked up a few tips from without buying, it’s called something like “Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers” and doesn’t really have tutorials just a lot of illustrated tips for acheiving certain looks or results. — posted by miles on March 3, 2005 9:32pm

Lots of nice elements in this shot: the lighting is nicely understated, the dof is great, and the composition is very appealing because of your low pov. Really great shot. — posted by matt on March 5, 2005 2:48pm

I agree with Dimitri about the manual. I use Photoshop at my job almost exclusively. I went to school for it. I’ve read the books. I’ve gone to over-priced seminars. Most of what I’ve learned has been on the job to be honest. But, the manual is by far a good paper resource.
BTW- I really am enjoying your photography. Keep up the great work!

“The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers” by Kelby is excellent. Nothing wrong with picking up a book and gleaning something from it. — posted by Brock on March 23, 2005 8:17pm
I was going to recommend the same Scott Kelby book that Brock did… — posted by Saroy on March 24, 2005 12:44pm
